There have been enormous research efforts in the development and characterisation of materials and search for their applications during the last two decades. Glasses, ceramic and polymeric systems are being intensively investigated for the development of next generation devices. These materials have unprecedented physical properties that can be tailored to meet the requirements of a particular application. The efforts are being made to reduce the size, weight and cost of the material to be used and at the same time to enhance its efficiency, reliability and application. Future development of multifunctional materials essentially needs cross disciplinary research. This book develops an introduction to the embryonic field of multifunctional materials and will be very useful for researchers because it examines multidisciplinary fields of material science.
