The second symposium on Greenhouse Gases in the Metallurgical Industries II was held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on August 25th, 2004. The papers in the first symposium demonstrated that the Metallurgical Industry was taking steps to improve efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. With the ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by a number of countries the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions has become even more critical. Eight papers were presented in the second symposium. The majority of the papers were concerned with the response of the iron and steel industry. The first paper in the symposium was from John Stubbles and was entitled "Global Warming-Reality or Conjecture". In the extractive metallurgy industry, reductions in carbon consumption, utilization of biomass, increased hydrogen usage, and improvements in efficiency will all contribute to decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. In the mining industry, gains can be made in a number of areas such as reducing the amount of cement used in backfill. The symposium proceedings were combined with the symposium on Waste Processing and Recycling in Mineral and Metallurgical Processing.
