Between the estuaries of the Mersey and Ribble lies the Sefton Coast, a tranquil stretch of coastline and an area of international importance. Extending from Liverpool to Southport, its marshes, beaches sand dunes have attracted attention from all over the world and today it is recognised as a significant conservation area. A beautiful combination of coast and countryside, with sandy beaches and rolling hills, make this a popular destination for visitors. As well its status as a Site of Scientific Interest, this coastline also boasts an intriguing history. In recent times, coastal erosion has uncovered footprints in mud and silt, which trace human activity on the coast back as far as 7,000 years ago. Since then, the Sefton Coast has undergone much change: Vikings have descended upon the area, farming techniques have developed, hordes of tourists have arrived, two World Wars have taken place and nature conservation projects have been implemented.
