Tyne & Wear Museums is one of England's largest museum services. It manages collections on behalf of the councils of Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, South Tyneside and North Tyneside and serves communities across the north-east of England. This volume brings together over 2,500 paintings, many of which have never been illustrated in print before. It demonstrates the quality, breadth and significance of the collections, which are 'Designated' by Government as being of national importance, and features magnificent works by artists such as Burne-Jones, Holman Hunt, Gauguin, L. S. Lowry, Stanley Spencer and John Martin.
