Gross NHS Spending in England in 1992-93 amounted to u29.4 billion, of which expenditure on drugs amounted to u3.3 billions, or 11.1 per cent. This report considers the increase in the cost of drugs to the NHS in recent years, the reasons for that increase, and likely future trends. It looks at how the government attempts to control the cost of drugs, and makes recommendations about the future price regulation schemes and the system of prescription charges."
