
Since 1975, a commercial industry for the cultivation of the European oyster has been evolving, mainly concentrated on developing the technology to produce seed oysters in a hatchery situation. The seed by-product from the research activities has enabled a small suspended culture industry to be established in Nova Scotia. For the industry to grow larger and become economically viable, it must move to bottom culture. This report presents the results of a project to develop a bottom culture, including the materials and methods used, an assessment of growth and overwintering, and the economics of the operation.
