Not illustrated. 1883 Excerpt:... GENERAL CODE OF TRIBAL CUSTOM IN THE S1RSA DISTRICT OF THE PANJAB. INTRODUCTION. ACCOUNT OF THE VARIOUS TRIBES. THE BXGRr JA'TS. According to the Census of 1881 there are in the Sirsa District 62,973 Jats or Jats, who thus form 25 per cent. of the total population. Of these, 38,320, or more than half, are returned as Hindus; 21,855, or about one third, as Sikhs; and 2,798 only as Musalmans. The Sikhs and Musalmans call themselves Jat, speak Panjdbi, have all come in recent times from the north and west, and live chiefly along the northeast border of the district; while the Hindus call themselves Jat, speak Hindi, have all come in recent times from the south and east, and live chiefly along the south-west border of the district. There are other differences between them and between each of these divisions and the Desi or Deswal Jats of Hariana and Rohtak, but these are probably due to religion and to history and surroundings, and they all seem to belong to one great Jat race, which forms the most important part of the population in all this part of the country. Not only are they the most numerous tribe in this district, but in Bikaner to the south, the BagrI Jats are the most numerous tribe, being estimated at 50,000 out of a population of 300,000: in Hissar to the east, the Jats, partly Bagri, partly Deswal, are by far the most numerous tribe, and form 27 per cent. of the total population: Rohtak, further east, may be considered the head-quarters of the Deswal Jats, 33 per cent. of the population of that district being Jats: in Pattiala to the north, the most important part of the population are the Sikh Jats; while on the west, in Montgomery, the Musalman Jats form 10 per cent. of the population.
