Craig Smith's 25th book surveys the lives of our 42 First Ladies from Martha Washington to Melania Trump. The book focuses on the illnesses, assassinations and infidelities these women endured. Since there is no constitutional provision for a First Lady, they had to invent themselves as they went along. In this way, they established many traditions including the Inaugural Ball, Christmas Trees at the White House, and the pre-inaugural tour the outgoing First Lady provides for the incoming First Lady. The book also covers some unusual mysteries including: Which First Lady committed manslaughter in her youth? Which First Lady ordered stimulants that killed her husband? Which First Lady became acting president for six months? Which First Lady became known as Lemonade Lucy? Which First Lady was married in the White House? Only two First Ladies have served non-consecutive terms. Only two First Ladies were foreign born. Smith provides a context for the for the lives of First Ladies by divided the book into seven eras, from the era of nation of building to the era of hope, change and chaos.
