This edition includes the essential original Tamil language poetry, translated into English, of the South Indian spiritual master Sri Ramana Maharshi (1879-1950). The intent of this volume is to offer a fresh translation, attempting to strike a balance between accuracy, readability and an artistic presentation of the poetry which hopefully does justice to this extraordinary collection. This edition provides valuable supplementary information and their sources (in the footnotes) which Ramana Maharshi refers to in the poetry regarding important figures, literature, and Hinduism as well as many integral philosophical concepts. This is helpful as there are numerous themes included in the poetry which can leave those unfamiliar either curious or confused. Regarding significant philosophical points, the footnotes specifically utilize Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi (1939) as their primary source. This was purposefully done to clearly present the most important theoretical concepts in Ramana Maharshi's own words, not the interpretation of anyone else. This edition has attempted to remove gender bias, the monotonous use of the same English words and avoids antiquated expressions such as 'Thou and Thee'. The works of Ramana Maharshi included in this text are: The Five Hymns to Arunachala, Ekanma Panchakam, Upadesa Saram, Ulladu Narpadu, Ulladu Narpadu Anubandham, Appalap Pattu, and Atma Vidya. This volume also provides original pyrographic artworks undertaken specifically for this project.
