Traditionally in soil survey, more effort is put into the taxonomic unit than the mapping unit, resulting in some map units being badly defined. This report describes a method which can facilitate accuracy of mapping through the survey from legend development to completion. The report includes a discussion of principles and procedures; examples from studies conducted in various regions of Canada and the United States; a description of statistical methods used in data compilation; and a discussion of the misconceptions of the method.
