
About the Author Stephen J. Wayne received his B.A. from the University of Rochester and M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. An expert on the American presidency, he has written eleven books, several in multiple editions, and over 100 articles, chapters, and book reviews. In addition to the THE ROAD TO THE WHITE HOUSE, his major works include THE LEGISLATIVE PRESIDENCY; PRESIDENTIAL LEADERSHIP (with George C. Edwards), now in its eighth edition; a co-authored introductory text entitled CONFLICT AND CONSENSUS IN AMERICAN POLITICS; as well as IS THIS ANY WAY TO RUN A DEMOCRATIC ELECTION?; IS THIS ANY WAY TO RUN A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT?; THE ELECTION OF THE CENTURY (with Clyde Wilcox); and more. Professor Wayne's latest book, published in 2011, is entitled OBAMA: FOR AND AGAINST HIMSELF. A Washington-based insider for forty-three years, Professor Wayne is a frequently quoted commentator on the presidency and presidential elections. He has served as president of the Presidency Research Group and The National Capital Area Political Science Association, is a member of the editorial boards of the PRESIDENTIAL STUDIES QUARTERLY and CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENCY, and regularly lectures to international visitors, senior federal executives, and college students in the United States and abroad. Professor Wayne has testified before Congress and committees of both major political parties.
