Woodstock, or Richard the Second, Part One, is an anonymous Elizabethan manuscript drama owned by the British Library, London. Since its discovery and publication by Halliwell in1870, it has excited curioisty and speculation--is it by Shakespeare or just a good imitation? Some of the best critics over the past 150 years have weighed in, establishing what we might call 'Woodstock Studies.' The Critical Legacy is an anthology of the best commentary, some for Shakespeare, like Ian Robinson, and some against, like MacDonald P. Jackson. Its inherent interest aside, Woodstock The Critical Legacy is a useful reader about authorship and attribution.
