It has long been noted in business literature that succesful organizations seem better at identifying key trends and changes in their environment and at learning how to deal with these changes. Despite this there is a certain lack in scientific studies of how this process of interpretation and learning takes place. This book provides the reader with an excellent overview of the academic literature on perceived environmental uncertainty and on how organizations interpret changes in their environment. The author draws on this literature and on two studies he carried out in the hotel industry to create a model of how hotel managers perceive and interpret their environment. He proposes and tests the role of uncertainty in limiting the actions of organizations.
