This guide covers the basics of the important topic of classification, with particular reference to building services. It explains what classification is, why it is needed, how it is used, and how to recognise a particular classification system if it is seen in use. It also outlines the classification systems currently in use within construction, such as CI/SfB, CAWS, NRM, Omniclass and Uniclass 2015. It relates classification to building information modelling (BIM), which has a very obvious need for a suitable classification system.
