Dar es Salaam means Abode of Peace, or House of Security, and is one of the names of Paradise in the Koran. Whilst essentially Swahili in culture, the city has a cosmopolitan touch due to its attraction as the capital, and to the harbour which draws in stangers with different customs, religions and speech. In this original idea, the streets of the city illuminate both the broader culture of Tanzania, and Dar es Salaam's history, art, culture, politics, religion, language and flora. The author takes the reader on twelve drives around the city - each one representing a different aspect of its character.
