
Traces the history of Jews in Baden from the medieval period until 1989. Pp. 125-143 discuss the Nazi period. Describes the boycott against Jewish enterprises, dismissal of Jewish functionaries, banishment of 15 Jewish university lecturers, burning of Jewish books, Nazi legislation, and the "Kristallnacht" pogrom. In October 1940, 6,000 Jews from Baden and Saarland were deported to Gurs, and those remaining in Baden were deported to Eastern European concentration camps between 1941-45. Some Jews went into hiding or adopted false identities, and survived. Notes that, in 1941-42, belongings of deportees were put up for auction.
