Not illustrated. 1903 Excerpt:...across the river at Sister's Ferry to the South Carolina side. At 2.30 p. m. we accordingly proceeded up the river, leaving the Macon at Purysburg. Heavy firing heard all day in the direction of Savannah, at intervals. At 4.40 p. m. came to alongside of Beck's Bluff, cast out a rope to a tree, and remained all night, about 32 miles from Savannah. December H.--Got up steam and proceeded up the river at 6:20 a. m. Passed Ebenezer at 10 a. m. About 10:45 a. m. turned men out with small arms on seeing a number of persons run from alongside of aflat tied at the foot of a bluff. Turned out to be negroes loading a flat with corn. Picked up a flat floating down the river. At 1:30 p. m. arrived at Sister's Ferry and found that all of Wheeler's cavalry, whom we were to assist in crossing, had crossed. At 2:30 p. m. proceeded up the river about 100 yards and came to anchor, to await news from below, to guide our future movements. Left a boat to assist in crossing a detachment of scouts. About 6:30 p. m. heard voices at the ferry; sent down a boat and found two men returning from flag of truce; assisted them in crossing. Commenced to blow out and clean boilers, to facilitate the raising of steam. Heard very heavy cannonading in a southerly direction to-day. December 15.--Remained at anchor. Proceeded with the cleaning of boilers. Heard cannonading in southerly direction apparently. No news. December 16.--Still at anchor. Colonel Rawls, Fifty-fourth Georgia Regiment, came on board to request assistance in crossing wagons, etc., over the ferry. Sent the cutter. Colonel Ralls reported the capture of Fort McAllister after a hard fight and almost annihilation of the garrison by the enemy.
