A historical and architectural study of the relationship between industrial formations and the city.The highly exploitative environment of the factory that once provided the organizational logic of the city has evolved into an urban-industrial complex designed for exceptional innovation, profit and control. The industrialization of China in the 20th century is unique, and it carries the seeds of the greatest urbanization project facing humanity today.This analysis asserts that the increasingly concealed factory, and its gritty labor conditions and production processes must not be expelled from our cities. They must be made more visible in our consumerist environments to act as checks and balances for the greater good of society and the environment.
