Analyzing the impact of the current recession on the major industrial center of the West Midlands, this study shows how the seeds of decline were present as early as the 1960s and 1970s. The authors trace the economic evolution of the area through the examination of demographic patterns,housing characteristics, and local government policies in order to offer explanations for the contracting industrial base.
