Annotation The symposium held in September 1997 focused on three areas of experimental and theoretical developments in nuclear physics: synthesis of superheavy elements (including studies of fusion-fission dynamics and sub-barrier fusion), physics with exotic nuclei (e.g., the study of deformation in light neutron-rich nuclei, inelastic proton scattering of unstable nuclei, and double giant resonance states), and astronuclear physics (thermonuclear and non-thermal reactions).
