An or a (the shortened form of an) is used to point out one thing, but not any particular one. An is used before a word beginning with a vowel sound; as, an orange, an Indian, an hour. A is used before a word beginning with a consonant sound; as, a boy, a date, a unit. Numerals. Adjectives which express a definite number are called Numeral. Many of the numerals are used as nouns also.
