This study examines changes in British law since 1950 which have had an impact on the civil and political rights of the individual and then sets those changes in the broader context of European and international human rights law. Comprehensive in its coverage, it includes a discussion of prisoners' rights, police powers, due process, privacy, freedom of association, assembly, and speech, minority rights, immigration, nationality, racial discrimination, womens' and childrens' rights, and sexual orientation. The choice of topics is solidly grounded in the perspective of the international and European Conventions and is not determined by current political debates. As such, it provides an important source of reference for all scholars and practitioners interested in international law and civil liberties, and a scholarly basis for further research.
