One of the major metaphysical poets of seventeenth century English literature, Richard Crashaw was a High Church Anglican cleric and Roman Catholic convert. He composed religious poetry that expressed a distinct mystical nature and an ardent Christian faith, as well as secular verses noted for their learned brilliance. Although today Crashaw's work is largely unknown, he was regarded as one of the most distinguished of the metaphysical poets, whose poetry has directly influenced the work of many poets in his own day and throughout the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
