The Midwest. The Great Depression. I was a poor, painfully shy kid growing up, who didn't make friends easily...until, that is, I stepped onto the football field. Or the basketball court. Or the baseball diamond. As the saying goes, "everybody loves a winner." And my athletic skills made me a winner, both on and off the field. Would that fame extend beyond the playground? Beyond high school? Unable to afford college but determined to earn a degree and improve my life, would my skills bring me a scholarship?
