In 1987, members of the Family Violence Program at the Canadian Council on Social Development conducted interviews with women who had been abused by their husbands or boyfriends. Some were aboriginal women who wanted others to hear about and learn from their stories. This document contains a descriptive overview of what it is like to be abused as an aboriginal woman. It contains testimonials from five women who have survived the violence in their lives. It also contains an interview with Liza, a drug and alcohol counsellor, and an elder who talks about her process of healing. Finally, it describes new directions and initiatives that are being developed to help family violence victims and offenders.
