The symposium on Ecological Assessments of Effluent Impacts on Communities of Indigenous Aquatic Organisms was held on 29-30 January 1979 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The purpose of the symposium was to provide a forum for scientists engaged in the development and application of methods of evaluating the effects of effluents on the biological integrity of surface waters. Emphasis was to be placed on methods of evaluating the effects of effluents on standing crop, community structure, and community function. The seventeen papers presented in this volume will hopefully be useful to those who are presently engaged in studies dealing with aquatic ecological assessments. A brief critique of these papers is presented in the summary of this volume.
