The history of Finnish officer training dates all the way back to the year 1779. Since then one generation of Finnish officers after another has received training and whenever a new institution of military training has been founded, the instructors and former students of its predecessors have participated in the early stages. This way an uninterrupted chain of traditions has been formed from the Haapaniemi Military School of the 1700s to the 21st century National Defence College.
