The customs system is perhaps the least studied of any area of the Roman administration. One of the main reasons for this is that no ancient author dealt with the topic. There is a relatively large amount of evidence, however, available from inscriptions, papyri, or seals. The articles collected in this volume discuss the Roman customs system from the perspectives of ancient history, epigraphy, papyrology, and archaeology, providing an overall picture of a complex customs system.
