Gardens inspire us throughout the year. In the monochromes of winter or the ambers of autumn, our favourite garden spaces provide shifting seasonal moods that colour our artistic sensibilities. These inviting moods unfold in this volume’s haiku poems, arranged by season, written by members of the Vancouver Haiku Group. Their inspiration is the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in the heart of Vancouver, British Columbia, where group members have met often to write and share their poetry. Haiku in The Jade Pond share the tones of the willow branches on the pond, and the naked plum, and move on to the whisper of an ink brush and the silence of the stones. These poems flow through the seasons, welcoming abundance as well as scarceness, movement as well as stillness, and all are framed in quiet contemplation.
