In the UK approximately 3.5 million people used drugs in the last year and 8.2 million people have an alcohol disorder. Alcohol and drug abuse cost the UK Government around 38 billion each year. The aim of this text is to provide a comprehensive basis for social workers to develop a rounded and considered approach to their practice with drug and alcohol users, in light of a clear understanding of the competing pressures that impact on drug and alcohol users lives.
