This report is a summary of the state of the nation's transportation systems and the issues and consequences of maintaining such a diverse and complex network. All transportation modes -- air, highway, rail, water, and pipeline -- are examined through available data and statistical studies. In addition, the report takes a closer look at the statistics themselves and identifies obstacles to attaining both quantity of and quality in information on transportation in the United States. This report highlights attempts toward the design and implementation of better measures to transform existing and new data into useful information.
