Summoned to Earth by an Imperial decree, the warleader of a confederation of outer planets expects betrayal but not the treason he finds, that the King of the Universe has been removed from office by the Empress-Consort. The warleader remains loyal to the Empire and fights to keep it united, restore peace, and to prevent another black age.
