Bill Forrest swears to seek revenge when his wife and child are run down and killed by a drunk attorney, who escapes punishment because of his connections. At the same time, 100 miles away at Northern Illinois University, Alice Solinsky has an abortion when Gregory Varonian leaves her for another woman. Alice and Gregory accidentally meet again six years later in Lake Forest, Illinois, where Alice is living with her husband, Larry McBride. When Gregory blackmails Alice into an affair, her resulting pregnancy causes her hard-drinking husband to think Jason is his son. When his drinking becomes unbearable, she divorces him and shortly after, meets widower and college teacher Bill Forrest at a party given by her best friend. A DUI accident causes Larry McBride to discover that Jason is not his son, and his anger, combined with drink, causes him to go after Jason's biological father. A story of life that begins in deceit, ends in death, suicide, and for the survivors, the understanding that it is the choices we make, both good and bad, that determine our future.
