Collected here are six prose stories of loyal and noble dogs in the service of humanity, illustrated by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, the foremost animal painter of his day. On the cover is one of his most famous paintings, "A Distinguished Member of the Humane Society." Queen Victoria's dogs, Dash, Hector, and Nero are the subject of one story. Landseer had first hand knowledge -- he had been commissioned by Victoria's mother to paint a portrait of Dash for Victoria's 17th birthday, just a year before she took the throne. This picture book was originally published circa 1882 by McLoughlin Brothers of New York.
