These photographs were taken using the old methods. In some instances using the very old methods with very old cameras. A Leica III from 1937. A Voigtländer Vito from the 50s. An old Minolta from the 70s. A medium format Mamiya from the 80s. Others were taken with inexpensive digital mirrorless cameras to enable the use of old manual focus lenses. The conveniences of the cutting edge ecosystem of contemporary DSLRs were stripped away. What is discovered when moving thus unencumbered, is that our true faces yet live on the street. We travel on foot in tightly constructed bubbles, and in the comfort of those imaginary force- fields? Certain that no one sees us? The masks slip away. Many of the pictures in this book reveal a people who are lost. Scared. Lonely. Tired. America is drowning. You’d never know it from our Instagram feeds, but we are drowning. And this is a story that needs to be told, because every second the lie of how great we feel is allowed to run amok is another second that the unhealthiness which got us here is encouraged to flourish unchallenged. And street photography should tell the truth.
