"This book is a series of essays, or studies, about the relationship of architecture and urbanism (the city). Traditionally, architecture and landscape had an integral relationship with the city, but at least since the Second World War architecture and landscape have been anti-urban and our cities have degenerated. The roots of this condition lie deep in the Eighteenth Century, when both architecture and society began to transform into modernism with its emphasis on private life. This is the subject of my first book, Court & Garden: From the French Hotel to the City of Modern Architecture (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1986). This current book argues for the reformation of architecture and landscape as formative urban elements---especially in a time of environmental crisis"--
