Trained as a paper, Michel Bouvet decided, after graduating from the Ecole des Beaux Arts, to devote his talent to the arts of the poster. Inspired by San Francisco's psychedelic-poster art of the Sixties, and by the politically changed Czech posters of the Prague Spring, Bouvet has long been concerned with the role of the artist in society. Working in the French tradition of the affiche cuturelle - literally, the "culture poster" - which dates back to Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's commercial art, Bouvet brings a painterly touch to eye-catching designs rich in visual puns and carefully chosen image-symbols.
