The exhibition catalogue “after nature” shows a special aspect of the artistic approach to nature: not the depiction of it, but rather how sculptors apply methods taken from nature. On display are four different positions. First, the cast from nature; second, the working of organically growing material; third, defamiliarisation through hybrid forms; and0fourth, abstraction of forms found in nature. Works in three dimensions are exhibited by four contemporary artists: Anne Koskinen from Finland, Reiner Maria Matysik from Berlin, Martin Schwenk from Düsseldorf, and Thomas & Renée Rapedius from Berlin. To attest that this kind of engagement with nature is not just a theme of contemporary art but follows in a notable tradition, art-historical key works by artists including Max Ernst, Gerhard Marcks, Bernhard Heiliger, Hans Arp, Thomas Grünfeld and Berlinde de Bruyckere are also part of the exhibition and catalogue.00Exhibition: Gerhard-Marcks-Haus, Bremen, Germany (21.09.2014 - 04.012015).
