Opening with the UN Secretary-General's statement on the urgent need for rich and poor countries alike to secure a sustainable future, and recalling the protests at the 1999 World Trade Organization meeting, the editors introduce an international law framework for settling environment and trade disputes. In 21 chapters, global contributors analyze cases relating to: public health (tobacco control), air pollution (reformulated gasoline), food safety (beef hormones), commercial fishing and endangered species (the shrimp-turtle case), and biosafety (genetically modified organisms).
