Care Story is a book designed for leaders. Whether you’re in the safety field, as is Tom McKnight, or a leader elsewhere in life, the lessons provided within this book will help you enhance your ability to lead well with a focus on safety and care for people. Tom was once asked about his vision for his workgroup. After considerable thought, he came up with the following, “With a focus on service and a caring mindset, we will consistently model Goal Zero behaviors and commitments.” This vision was eventually shortened to “Care and Service.” This three-word phrase was portable and easy to remember at work, home, or anywhere. Care and service mean doing the right thing even when nobody is watching, but we all know that someone is always watching, especially the person in the mirror. So, whether you work in an oil refinery, like Tom, at a newspaper, capitol building, school, hospital, or if you’re showing your kids how to mow the lawn, care and service are worth thinking about and acting upon. It’s a philosophy worth contemplating and enacting. This book represents Tom’s “lesson of care”—a wish to convey all he has learned over the years translated into examples and experiences to be used by others to achieve the utmost goal—nobody gets hurt.
