Careers in Focus: Politics describes a variety of careers in the world of politics-in local, state, and federal government; at newspapers, magazines, and publishing companies; at colleges and universities; in courtrooms and law offices; and in embassies and consulates throughout the world. These careers are as divers in nature as they are in earnings and educational requirements. Earnings range from minimum wage for campaign workers to $200,000 or more for federal and state officials, fund-raisers, lawyers, and lobbyists. A few of these careers-such as campaign workers-require little formal education, but are excellent starting points for a career in the industry. However, the majority of jobs in politics (such as ambassadors, city managers, Foreign Service officers, and political reporters) require a minimum of a bachelor's degree. The careers of lawyer and judge require a law degree, and political science professors need a doctorate.--From the introduction.
