This manual has been developed for those staff members at further education unit (FEU) colleges and polytechnics in the United Kingdom that are responsible for Professional, Industrial, and Commercial Updating (PICKUP) staff development activities. It is divided into four sections. The first section provides background on the PICKUP project, and the second discusses issues, findings, and recommendations concerning staff development activities for persons teaching in the United Kingdom's FEU system. Section 3 outlines 10 steps to a successful workshop. Topics covered include the goals of a workshop, workshop planning and preparation, final arrangements, lead time, ice-breaking activities, things to do, things that can go wrong, ways of ending a workshop, and follow-up activities. The fourth section consists of 16 workshop activities (each of which includes a commentary, instructional text, and a procedure for delivering the instructional text). The following are among the topics covered: the purpose of staff development, ways of establishing an institutional framework for PICKUP, motivation and reward, use of a group's resources, ways of learning, techniques for use with adult learners, selection of appropriate teaching methods, self-evaluation, evaluation and monitoring techniques, and course design and adaptation. Appendixes include a staff development grid and resource list. (MN)
