In 1985, a comprehensive program was initiated to investigate and monitor all active and closed waste disposal sites in Ontario to determine the existing impacts and the potential for future impacts on human and natural environments in the vicinity of sites, and to assess the need for remedial work to mitigate these impacts. This Phase 3 study was conducted on the Newton landfill in Cambridge, Ontario. The hydrogeological study assessed the impact of the site on the quality of ground water and surface water at the site boundaries and identified any need for remedial measures required to prevent the migration of leachate and/or methane gas beyond the boundaries of the site.
