An autobiographical novel of a teenage girl and her family from her transfer from an old fashioned Chinese education to a mission school in the 1920's till the failure of the great revolution of 1924-27. Li Pingsheng, the daughter of a leading member of the Hubei gentry, is blinded by her love and devotion to her father to see his true nature. Time and again, she refuses to believe what others tell her about him, even after he is arrested and imprisoned by the peasants during the revolution.
