The purpose of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is to foster the transition to the market economy in the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. In the main this is carried out by the Bank through investments that promote the development of the private sector. This series of annual Transition Reports, of which this is the second, provides an essential analysis for the Bank of both the transition and the role of investment in the process. It will also be useful to others in business looking to invest in the new market economy or government and academics who are studying the process.
