This volume is the first published record of the historical America Art collection in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Written by curators Ilene Susan Fort and Michael Quick, it catalogues 188 oil paintings, 43 sculptures, and 104 water-color paintings. Detailed entries come after a brief history of the collection's formation. Short biographies of the artists and suggestions for further reading are provided for the general reader and as a background to the discussions of the works. Entries on the individual paintings and sculptures discuss central questions in their interpretation and provide biographical and historical context as well as iconographic and stylistic analysis. These are followed by listings of previous owners, exhibition histories, and references to art-related literature.
