Published in conjunction with the 2002-2003 exhibitions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, this volume (presented in both English and Japanese) displays 350-plus examples of Munakata Shiko's woodcuts, watercolors, calligraphy, oil paintings, and calligraphy. The color illustrations reveal the range of his styles from the 1930s to the 1970s, each described in detail. Essays by art curators and art history professors discuss his life as an artist and the literary sources that inspired him, as well as biographical information drawing on many of his own writings.
