Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights aims to provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with a clear and stimulating exposition of Strasbourg jurisprudence which now exceeds 1000 cases. The book focuses on the most significant articles of the Convention and seeks to bring out some of the key themes in the developing jurisprudence such as the positive obligations of the state, the need to ensure effective protection of human rights, the regulation of the welfare state and the Convention's vision of the relationship of democracy to human rights. With the Convention now over 50 years old the book aims to provide students with a critical perspective on its development and to enable them to engage with debate on the future of human rights protection in Europe.
