The true story of a London childhood during the Blitz - full of vigour, truth and humour. Marian Hughes was born in the year her father committed suicide. She was placed in a home for infants, and then joined her elder sisters and brother in Spurgeon's Orphanage. When the War came, they were evacuated. Then, suddenly, Marian's mother swept up her children to live with her in a filthy flat off Baker Street. Marian suffered from semi-starvation, no schooling, and the bombing of London. She was left alone to support her deranged and violent mother by stealing and begging, but she never lost her spirit.
