He.had no equal in beauty, and he triumphed over all the efforts of jealousy; his eyes were black, The late Mons. Savary had, during his residence in Egypt, collected a number of Arabian tales, which he, at first, translated, for the purpose of rendering the language familiar to him. Many fragments of these translations have been found among his manuscripts, which the author, cut off in the prime of life, had not been able to finish. But the Loves of Anas-Eloujoud and Ouardi form an exception, the Author having, before he died, prepared every thing for the publication of this little Romance, such as it now appears. It will easily be seen how well the pen of M. Savary was adapted to this kind of pro3 duction, black, without the assistance of art J; his cheeks were brilliant as the stars which shine in the" bosom of darkness. Nature had bestowed on him so many charms, that whoever saw, could not but love him. Wherever he appeared, the gracefulness of his deportment secured him universal favour; whenever he spake, the fascinating magic of his wit extorted universal admiration. When the sultan, at any extraordinary festival, drank the nectar of Schiras, he received his cup from the hands of Anas-Eloujoud, which seemed to impart additional sweetness to the delicious beverage. When this young lord was absent, the pleasures of the table beGame insipid to the sultan, who found fault with every thing about him, and even spilled his wine, saying, " This is forbidden liquor " duction, which he considered as a relaxation from more serious labours; and it will be regretted, that his premature death should have prevented him from publishing, in his native tongue, a complete collect...
